Additional Background

A carrier aircraft produced specifically to support air-launch operations for Virgin Galactic's sub-orbital passenger spacecraft. Built by Scaled Composites, it is based on the White Knight aircraft that air-launched SpaceShipOne (the model on which vehicles for Virgin Galactic are based). It can carry up to 17,000-kg to 50,000-ft. One of fuselages provides space for passengers, to allow for passenger training.

Virgin Galactic ultimately constructed two aircraft, although additional aircraft had been panned for an expansion of operations - prior to the decision to pivot towards the Delta-class spacecraft with their associated new carrier aircraft. Prior to the purchase of the Boeing 747 aircraft that became Cosmic Girl, and eventual spin-off of Virgin Orbit that followed, White Knight Two was also considered as a carrier aircraft for LauncherOne.
