Additional Background

A launch facility for SuperHeavy/Starship, including launch tower, tank farm, launch mount, and deluge system. It does not have a flame trench due to the geology of the site, instead relying on the deluge system to handle the intense forces of the many Raptor engines on a SuperHeavy booster.

In addition to its function as a launch tower, the launch site supports (the as-yet theoretical) recovery of both Super heavy and Starship, using the "Mechazilla" arms.

Launch Site History

This was the first SuperHeavy-Starship launch site completed by SpaceX, supporting OFT-1 and OFT-2 in 2023, as well as Flight 3 and Flight 4 in 2024. It sustained substantial damaged after OFT-1, leading to significant additions in the form of a deluge system and a steel deck over much of the concrete below the engines as part of armoring and mitigation to support launching of such a rocket without a flame trench (a flame trench is not possible at Boca Chica as constructed, due to the nature of the soil below the site.
