After a short service history for the H-II, JAXA embarked on development of an improved launcher that could move into serial production and achieve greater reliability. While the H-IIA was originally developed by JAXA and a national consortium, H-IIA production and operation was turned over the MHI Launch Services early in its service history - and MHI Launch Services continue building and operating them today.
H-IIA has made 49 launches from its debut in 2001 to Q3 2024. These are all operated by MHI Launch Services for JAXA. All launches (except for the sixth flight in November 2003) have been successful. It was originally build by a Japanese consortium and operated by JAXA, before both production and operation were shifted to MHI Launch Services in 2007.
H-IIA was derived from the earlier H-II launcher, integrating improvements over the earlier design for serial production and reliability.
