Wallops begin as a rocket test facility in 1945. Over time this included testing for manned spaceflight during the Mercury program. Rocket launch facilities include launch sites and launch support facilities, as well as a runway. The civilian Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport is on part of the facility.
