Of seven planned launch sites, two currently exist - supporting Soyuz-2 and Angara launchers.
Svobodny-18, an ICBM launch site was originally organized in 1968 to support developmental testing and launches of these ballistic missiles. After the break-up of the Soviet Union, in 1993, the Russian Federation began looking for a spaceport to replace the Baikonur Cosmodrome, now located in Kazakhstan, and to augment their facilities at Plesetsk - which couldn't support larger launchers. From 1993 through 1997 decommissioned ICBMs (referred to by the name "Start") launched from the site, then known as Svobodny Cosmodrome.
After a time, the Russian Federation renewed its efforts to develop a substantive spaceport to replace Baikonur, breaking ground in 2011 at the same site, now renamed to Vostochny. The first launch of a Soyuz-2 launcher took place in 2016.
