Additional Background

Shortly after being renamed Vandenberg Air Force Base from Cooke Air Force Base, the facility saw its first rocket launch in the form of a Thor launch from SLC-2E. A variety of other military and civilian launches have occurred since, and continue today; there has been a commercial launch presence since 1996. In 2021, the base was renamed after the creation of the US Space Force to Vandenberg Space Force Base.
