Additional Background

Most operations ceased with the end of the M-V launcher in the 2000s. Suborbital launches, and launches of the Epsilon launcher have continued, alongside high-altitude balloon operations.

Five launch sites have been built at various times at the spaceport.

Originally organized in 1962, it was intended to replace the rocket test facility at Akita - to provide larger area of ocean in which to drop spent stages.
