The first orbital launches of North Korean satellites took place from this site. Nominally operated by the National Aerospace Technology Administration later in its useful life, but was originally constructed as a launch site for ballistic missile testing

History

Originally built by the North Korean military in the 1980s and 1990s, the first operations took place in 1984. Ballistic missile operations predominated, though the first North Korean orbital launch took place in 1998 from the site. The site moved to an inactive status in 2014, though the facilities remain intact.
