History

Selected by the Indian government in 1969, it was operational by 1971. The first (unsuccessful) orbital launch attempt took place in 1979, with a launch of the Satellite Launch Vehicle. The site has since seen launches from all ISRO launch vehicles.

Until 2005 there was only a single launch site - with the second one added to increase launch cadence. An additional launch site is under consideration in preparation for crewed spaceflight operations.
