In addition to two launch sites, there is a solid propellant production facility at the spaceport - along with the integration facilities required to support operations.
Selected by the Indian government in 1969, it was operational by 1971. The first (unsuccessful) orbital launch attempt took place in 1979, with a launch of the Satellite Launch Vehicle. The site has since seen launches from all ISRO launch vehicles.
Until 2005 there was only a single launch site - with the second one added to increase launch cadence. An additional launch site is under consideration in preparation for crewed spaceflight operations.
