Organized to pursue work on ballistic missiles and space launchers, there is suggestion that the site closely-mirrors the layout of the Israeli facility at Palmachim. When the facility was engaged in launcher development it was during a period of close defense cooperation with the Israeli military.
Originating in the 1980s as a site operated by the South African Air Force, the Denel company took over operations in the 1990s. Today, it focuses on aerospace testing. Two launches of the RSA-3 launcher took place in 1989 and 1990 from the site - but it has otherwise seen only aerospace and ballistic missile testing.
