The proposed spaceport would be located in the north of Djibouti, in the Obock region, encompassing a site of not less than 10 square kilometers. Initial marketing materials suggest it would support at least seven launch sites and multiple rocket engine test sites. In addition to the development of the spaceport, additional required infrastructure investment is identified including port facilities, a highway, and additional power transmission.
This spaceport is generally-defined within the scope of China's Belt and Road initiative. The companies involved are both Chinese - and it would be assumed that Chinese launch services providers would have preference.
In January 2023, China-based Hong Kong Aerospace Technology Group Limited, Touchroad International Holdings Group, and the Djibouti government signed an initial Memorandum of Understasnding to consider developing such a facility within the country.
Expected follow-on contract expected later in Q1 2023 was not yet been signed. The MOU has since expired.
