Additional Background

The Koonibba range is organized around four main elements:

  • Inland suborbital launch site.
  • Primary downrange recovery range.
  • Extended recovery range for orbital recovery.
  • Secure storage and logistics facilities in nearby Ceduna, South Australia, Australia.

With these elements, the Koonibba Test Range provides for both suborbital launches with recovery and recovery of payloads from orbit. The extended recovery range has a zone 350km long along a path from polar orbits, that is uninhabited. It provides a capability for commercial providers seeking to validate point-to-point technology and provide recovery for in-orbit manufacturing.

In addition to supporting HyImpulse's suborbital testing, it will support orbital recovery by United States-based Varda Space, and engine testing from Canada-based Reaction Dynamics.
