History

Originally formed in 1946, the first suborbital launch took place in 1947 with a captured German A-4, which was tested at the site on several occasions. During the Cold War there would be a sustained low flight rate from the spaceport starting in 1966, supporting mainly military launches. In 2024 ballistic missile test facilities were damaged in a Ukrainian drone attack.
