Additional Background

Has a history dating back to 1958, and was the site of the People's Republic of China's first satellite launch in 1970. Though it has a long military and national space program history, today it also supports operations by Chinese commercial space companies. As with a number of United States launch sites, the spaceport is operated by the Chinese military. In addition to launch sites, there are control facilities and other support equipment. Because the site is based inland (near the Mongolia border, roughly centered east-west within the People's Republic of China) expended booster stages fall on ground ranges, rather than water.

In addition to typical launch operations, the national program crewed Chinese launches take place from this spaceport.
