The offshore launch complex, and its associated offshore and onshore control facilities, were used to launch Italy's first satellite into orbit on an American-manufacturer launcher from the site in the 1960s. Though the site needs repairs (maintenance fell-off in the 1990s), discussions are ongoing about re-opening the spaceport for launches.
Originally organized through a partnership of partnership between the Sapienza University of Rome's Aerospace Research Centre and the United States' NASA. A series of small rockets launched from the spaceport between 1964 and 1988.
