The precursor entity was formed in 1998, however, it experienced a number of significant financial difficulties, including a bankruptcy. Eventually, the United States government intervened, helping make the company financially stable. Iridium Satellite LLC started the service in 2001, leading to the announcement of the NEXT constellation in 2007.
